“Impish Über-talent Nico Muhly, known to some as Philip Glass’s protégée, to others as the guy who helps make Björk, Rufus Wainwright, and Antony sound better, and to most as the one of the next great hopes for the future of classical music...”
– New York Magazine
"Affecting, resonant, and engaging. There are lights in the darkness and a holy ghost in the
Son Lux machine. The lyrical concerns of Sufjan Stevens circa Seven Swans, production techniques from Massive Attack, and the classical habits of Nico Muhly"
– pitchfork
Composer Nico Muhly returns to the Southern a year and a half after his stunning Twin Cities debut. Since that time, Muhly has amassed world wide attention and commissions from such heavyweight institutions as the American Ballet Theatre, Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera Ballet, and English National Opera. His bio, which includes film scores, two critically acclaimed albums, and guest appearances at the Whitney Museum
and Carnegie Hall, seems impossibly impressive for a composer yet in his 20s. This rare, intimate appearance at the Southern Theater is testament to Muhly’s admiration for the music of Son Lux, an artist he describes as “brave” and his work, “gorgeous”
(The Guardian). The program will feature two new pieces with violist Nadia Sirota.
Son Lux is Ryan Lott—innovative composer, zealous collaborator, sought-after remixer, and known to a growing number of admirers as the “future of modern pop” (Resonator Magazine). His impressive debut,
At War With Walls & Mazes, earned him the title Best New Artist 2008 by NPR’s
All Songs Considered and multiple awards for album of the year. Son Lux performs on acoustic piano, vocals and electronics, accompanied by 3D visual instrumentalist Joshua Ott, dancers Jennifer Lott, Matthew Keefe, Brittany Fridenstine and Marcos Vedoveto) to reinvent the exquisite meditations from his debut album with new arrangements developed exclusively for this Southern Theater performance. |
