Celebrating the new (jadid), and honoring
the traditional (turath), Jawaahir Dance
Company celebrates its twentieth
anniversary and fifteenth season at the
Southern Theater. In keeping with her
commitment to presenting the best of
Arabic music and dance, Artistic Director
Cassandra Shore fills the stage with new
works celebrating enchanting music
and culture from a region that nurtures
some of the world’s most thrilling dance
traditions. Jawaahir (“jewels” in Arabic)
combines traditional folkdances and
contemporary Middle Eastern ballets in
a theatrical feast for both newcomers
and the most global of appetites.

Georges Lammam intro class:
The Southern Theater presents a unique opportunity to increase your knowledge. Master violinist and instructor Georges Lammam presents a lecture/demonstration about the basics of Arabic music. Lammam
helps to uncover the secrets of its structure, and, using
examples played on various instruments, gives participants
practical examples of tunings, intervals, rhythms, and
improvisational structure in Arabic music. Both classical
and popular musical genres will be included.
