"The band melds the modern and the classical, using tools of both high-brow and low-brow tradition to build huge instrumental songs that make most post-rock whimper. It is music both peaceful and haunting." -
PopMatters.com
Formed in 1992 in Melbourne, Australia, Dirty Three is often credited for paving the way for modern instrumental rock. Combining violin, electric guitar and drums, the eccentric instrumental trio infuse rock energy into folk melody and classical chamber music in a careful acoustic ballet between soothing melancholy and invigorating explosion. The band hit its stride with
Horse Stories in 1996, and Rolling Stone called its sound, "some of the grittiest, most mesmerizing music you'll hear this year." Since then, Dirty Three's reputation as "artists' artists" led to powerful collaborations with PJ Harvey, Cat Power, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, among many others.
Auxiliary events:
Mon. September 14, 5:30-6:30pm
Discussion at the Weisman Art Museum with Dirty Three, moderated by Weisman curator Diane Mullin
This discussion will explore parallels between Dirty Three and the
American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008), whose work will be
on view in the Weisman exhibition Au Courant: Robert Rauschenberg’s
Currents. One of the most influential 20th century American artists, Rauschenberg left a legacy as an innovator, a cross-disciplinary collaborator, and a master of blending high and low culture in his work. Framed as a series of direct questions to the band about their philosophies, practices, and resulting music, this discussion will examine the creative process outside and beyond the strictures of traditional categories like media, cultural status, and commercial vs. fine art.
Free. Advance RSVP to rsvp@southerntheater.org.
Tues. September 15 following the concert
Meet Dirty Three at a casual reception at the Weisman Art Museum. View
the exhibition Au Courant: Robert Rauschenberg’s Currents, enjoy
complimentary refreshments and listen to the band’s self-selected playlist.
