Eurydice

By Sarah Ruhl (A-Stage Productions) | Dec 2-5 @ 8:30pm

Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl is a re-imagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus, told from the perspective of Eurydice.  After she dies on her wedding day, Eurydice arrives in the Land of the Dead having lost the memories of her beloved, and of her life in the living world. Reuniting with her father, she struggles to remember and reconstruct the love she shared with Orpheus while rebuilding tender relationship she shared with her father.  As the tale goes, she must choose between returning to the Land of the Living to live a life with her husband, or remain in the Land of the Dead with her father.  A haunting and beautiful love story, Eurydice explores what it means to experience loss, and considers love as a constant process of remembering.

A-Stage’s production features an original score that works to accentuate the disjointed, “Alice in Wonderland” environment that Ruhl has written into the script.  The production team features many female leaders—the director, costumer, set designer and stage manager are all young women dedicated to being a part of the Minneapolis art community.

The haunting story of Eurydice explores themes that often surface during the holiday season.  The play deals with themes of family & of loss—what it is like to lose a family member, and how we work to remember them once they are gone.  Eurydice rests on the idea of memory and of family stories—how our memories shape our sense of self & affect our perception of our world.
